Phil's Battle With Cancer
In April 2006, Phil started chemotherapy. He was an in-patient at North Shore University Hospital because he had an intestinal blockage that affected routine eating and digestion. Despite not being able to eat for some time, Phil was in great spirits. The doctors indicated that surgery combined with chemotherapy was the best treatment plan. On April 14, 2006 Phil had surgery to alleviate the obstruction.
Phil then had a couple transfusions and some fevers on and off, but the doctors were proactively and aggressively keeping things under control. Physically, Phil got a little stronger each day and kept his spirits up.
In May 2006, Phil left the surgery floor and moved to the oncology floor. The doctors waited about 3 weeks for a complete surgical recovery before starting chemotherapy again. In June 2006, a new drug was added to his treatments and after a few treatments, he was discharged from North Shore University Hospital. Unfortunately, Phil returned to the hospital in early July 2006 because he ran into respiratory difficulty and required the support of oxygen.
Phil lost his battle with cancer on Friday, July 21, 2006. Fortunately, Phil fought long and hard enough to see his daughter Olivia Lorraine, who was born a healthy, 6 lbs 10 ounces on Tuesday, July 18, 2006.
All of the support and prayers from so many people truly enriched Phil during his battle with cancer. Kind words, inspiring thoughts and fond memories of the past were shared with him and brought many smiles. All of your messages were gifts to Phil during his lengthy hospital stay.
